OVERVIEW AND DISCLAIMER
Education events are delivered by The Faculty of Children’s Nurse Education (FCNE), working closely with partner organisation's and stakeholders to ensure that they meet the quality standards of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.
Information is correct at date of publication. Education events are reviewed regularly and updated so details may change.
Education event resources reflect the policies and procedures of University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust. Practice in your work area may differ. Please seek advice from a locally based practice educator regarding appropriate practice at your organisation.
Alteration and falsification of FCNE documents is not tolerated and will be investigated. Disciplinary action may be undertaken and students may have to cease their studies due to this.
All reasonable steps are taken to ensure that services stated within this Moodle site are provided for. We cannot guarantee these services in the event of industrial action or events beyond our departments control which may affect course delivery. We will undertake all reasonable steps to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum in such cases.
Assessments
Academic Support
Our education event facilitators are experienced practitioners in their subjects who will provide learners with support throughout the duration of the event and any related academic assessments. As well as email support, learners may wish to attend individual tutorials arranged at a mutually convenient time.
Academic support stops one week before an assignment submission deadline. After this time event facilitators can only advise on general queries.
Learners can only seek guidance from one event facilitator at a time. If a learner wishes to seek guidance from a second event facilitator, they must first discuss with the original event facilitator and gain their agreement.
Anonymity & Confidentiality
It is a professional standard to maintain anonymity and confidentiality throughout your work with regards to patients/carers/colleagues/organisations. This extends to a Learner's studies.
If a learner's work does not maintain anonymity and confidentiality as set out in the marking criteria they may be penalised.
Pass Mark
Unless otherwise stated, each assignment element must gain 40% to pass.
If a learner does not achieve a 40% pass for an assessment element they will be required to resubmit this element.
Resubmissions are capped. You will have 1 attempt at resubmission. Additional resubmissions will be considered on an individual basis.
Successfully completed resubmitted elements will have an overall mark capped at 40%.
Students who do not pass after retake will fail the academic section of their event.
Controlled Assessments
It is the learner's responsibility to have the correct controlled assessment time and location to attend and participate.
If a learner does not attend their scheduled controlled assessment they will receive a mark of zero.
If a learner does not adhere to their controlled assessments rules they will receive a mark of zero.
Plagiarism
Not acknowledging sources is called plagiarism. This is not tolerated in academia. Learners must properly acknowledge someone else's work or risk breaching rules related to plagiarism. This could lead to a learner being disqualified from participating further in the education event they are enrolled in and/or reported to your employers and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Plagiarism could include (but not excluding other examples) the points below:
- Passing off own work that is partly or wholly the work of another student.
- Citing and referencing sources that have not been used.
- Quoting, summarising or paraphrasing material in an assessment without citing the original source.
- A learner ‘recycling’ a piece of previous work that they previously submitted for another module or course and then re-submitting as a new piece of work (ie self-plagiarism).

Pears, R., and Shields, G. (2013) Cite Them Right. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan.Submission of Assessments
Unless otherwise stated, all work must be submitted electronically via our Moodle site. Work submitted in other formats will not be marked.
Assignment deadline dates and times will be stated on a learner's event Moodle pages. There is a 2 day window for late submissions unless Extenuating Circumstance (EC) processes are applied for. In the event of a submission after the 2 day window and no EC process is in place, the submission will be counted as Did Not Submit (DNS) and will receive zero marks.
If a learner is unable to meet deadlines for the submission of assessments and they have a valid reason as set out in the Deferral of Course & Extenuating Circumstances pages of these Regulations & Procedures, they can apply for a deferral. A Learner must correspond with their event facilitator to ensure that appropriate administration is undertaken and submitted within the allotted time.
Word Count
If an assignment requests a word count, this must be provided on the assignment front sheet. The wordcount includes intext citations but excludes reference list, subtitles and appendices.
- Any work exceeding the word count will not be marked or counted towards your final grade.
Attendance & Hours
It is an expectation that learners attend 100% of all taught education.
Attendance on the first day of all multi-day events facilitated by the Faculty of Children's Nurse Education is mandatory.*
*If attending Paediatric Critical Care Level's 1 and 2, the second day is also mandatory.
Certification of attendance is only given to learners who attended 80% or more of all taught education.
Taught education takes place between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the day. Further information can be found in your education event programme which will be made available prior to the event.
If a learner is unable to attend a study event they must contact the event facilitator or Faculty of Children’s Nurse Education before the start of the first session of the day. Learners must report their absence to their clinical work areas as per the absence policy of their specific departments/organisations.
To fully realise the module outcomes learners must undertake additional self-study to underpin the knowledge gained through taught days. This will ensure that learners achieve their potential from the education event. Additional self-study may include learners being given learning materials to take away to prepare for an upcoming session.
Deferral of Event & Extenuating Circumstances
Please note, any decisions will be made in conjunction with an Educator external to the course. There will be an allowance of 4-6 weeks for a Resubmission.
Evaluation of Event
To ensure that we as a department are delivering high quality education which meets a learners needs we would appreciate a learners honest answers to the questions posed in education event evaluations. Evaluations can take place in the middle of the event and relate to specific sessions as well as an event as a whole. This process enables our team to monitor quality and make adjustments where necessary to future events.
Feedback for your Work
Assignment Feedback: what you can expect as a student undertaking a Faculty of Children's Nurse Education (FCNE) course:
This guide is to help you as a student get the most out of the assignment feedback you receive from your module team.
We always encourage students to engage and request feedback as we know students who do engage will often achieve a higher mark than those who do not.
What is feedback and why is it useful for you as a student?
Feedback in the context of the assignments set by the FCNE is helping you as a student to see how you can improve your work without telling you exactly what you need to do!
As the written assignments set by FCNE are centred around developing clinical practice and patient care, you are also developing your ability to reflect on and develop practice; becoming inquisitive practitioners.
Referring to the assignment brief and or the marking criteria can help you as a student understand what the marker will be looking for when you submit your draft work.
The assignment marking criteria is the equivalent of Degree level, so in an assignment the marker is looking for critical analysis (usually of the literature), synthesis and evaluation leading to justification for practice.
How much feedback can I expect from my module team?
In order to ensure parity and fairness there needs to be a limit on how much feedback can be given to an individual student. Every student is offered the same amount of time for feedback as set out in each course. It is up to the student to determine if they will access the maximum opportunities for feedback or not. What experience has taught us is that students who do engage are more likely to achieve a better mark.
For Posters:
You can request feedback on the following:
- The idea – does it fit the assignment brief and module outcomes?
- Content outline – does the proposed content match the title and fit in with the above. Is there a clear link to practice?
- Overall design and visual appeal of the poster
- Detailed feedback on one third of the content i.e. 2-3 boxes – ask your educator to feedback on either the area you feel least confident about OR the nursing care/justification area which is a large percentage of the marks
- You can ask general questions around the poster assessment process
For other written pieces such as the QI project
You can request feedback on the following:
- The idea – does it fit the assignment brief and module outcomes
- Content outline – does the proposed content follow the assignment brief and module outcomes?
- Detailed feedback on 20% of the work ( 400 out of a 2,000 word assignment) As with the poster ask your educator to feedback on the part of the assignment you feel less confident with OR a section of the main body
The above is in addition to group and individual tutorials provided during a course.
How many times can I ask for feedback?
If you seek feedback for your idea, then the outline followed by a detailed section of your work, this amounts to 3 episodes.
Additionally if you have made wholesale changes to one section you were provided detailed feedback on, you can send in that section for feedback comments once more.
Alternatively you may wish to develop your idea sending a more complete draft for comment; however your module educator(s) can only comment on a percentage of the total so please tell them which sections you want them to look at.
What you cannot do is request detailed feedback on one section than a further section; otherwise you can end up being given feedback on virtually the whole piece.
When can I ask for Feedback?
Unless otherwise directed, feedback can normally be given from when the assignment is set until 7 days before the submission/presentation date. The rationale for the 7 day rule is that if you as a student send a piece of work within that time frame, there is an increased pressure and insufficient time for the educator to comment on your submission and for you to act upon the feedback.
How can I receive Feedback?
Students vary in how you prefer to receive feedback. If requesting verbal feedback it is good practice to for your educator to follow it up with an email confirming your discussions. This is something you the student can then refer back to.
Can more than one educator provide feedback?
Some of the courses provided by FCNE have more than one educator as part of the course team. You should approach only one educator for feedback, but do copy the other(s) in so they know you have asked for feedback. Educators do share and keep feedback.
Can I ask “is this work good enough for a pass”
This is a question you might want to ask. However as educators we would rather not answer that question as all work is double marked so a borderline pass may become a fail.
How quickly should I expect to receive feedback?
We aim to give formative feedback to you within 7 days and Summative feedback within 4 weeks of the feedback request being sent/ submitted. Feedback will be returned to you via email or via Moodle (your educator will let you know by which format feedback is sent). Due to the uncertainty of the email and Trust blocking systems your educator will whenever possible let you know that they have sent it. If you do not hear within a few days do contact the Faculty office.
How Can I ensure that I do well in my assignment(s)?
There are several simple steps you can take as a student to help you succeed in your studies:
- Read the course handbook taking careful note of the module assessment section
- Make notes when the assignment(s) are being discussed during the module
- If you are unsure of anything ask the module team not your colleagues – assignment do change over time
- If you have not studied for a while seek additional tutorial support and read the Faculty’s study skills handbook
- Send in draft work to your module tutor/team and carefully read the comments, asking questions if you are unsure. Remember your colleagues and friends are not marking your work!
My Feedback seems quite negative?
Some students comment that feedback is “always negative” this is not meant to be the case.
- As educators, we do comment when you have done well. More often though we comment on areas for development as this is what you need to know to improve either that piece of work or for the next time you are studying.
- If you do not understand what has been said do contact the educator who made the comments as is important you understand what has been said and why.

University Credits
Work-Based Learning Modules
Universities can award accreditation for attendance on professional courses. A learner can approach a university of their choice and they will look at the course you have undertaken along with any associated academic work. An agreement with university and learner will then be formed whereby the learner will have to undertaken additional academic work to meet the university's chosen outcomes. After successfully completing this work an individual will gain further university credits which they can put towards any university pathways they may be on.
One of our local university's The University of the West of England provide this award. Further information including contact details can be found through the following link:

University Award Pathways
Learners may have undertaken various post-graduate courses facilitated by different Higher Education Institutes throughout their career. Often successful completion means acquiring a number of credits that can be put towards either a degree or masters. A learner can contact a university of their choice and enquire as to which of the courses they have successfully passed being put towards one of these pathways. The university will then be able to inform you which pathway you need to enroll on and what education you need to undertake to gain enough credits to successfully complete this pathway.
One of our local university's The University of the West of England provide this award. Further information including contact details can be found through the following link:
https://www.uwe.ac.uk/courses/professional-development/professional-development-awards/build-your-own-qualification/pda-qualificationsNB. The costs involved in attaining University credits are additional to the cost of attending one of our courses. These costs will need to be met by the individual or their organisation.
